Florentine wooden jewelry box with gesso relief and gold leaf, featuring the “Dance of the Muses” from Le Parnasse after Mantegna, circa 1950–1960; dimensions 10 × 7 × 4.3 cm; weight 65 g; condition good, used with minor signs of aging.
Description from the seller
Florentine courtesy box in golden wood and stucco – Decor "Le Parnasse" after Mantegna – Italy, circa 1940-1950
Description:
Elegant courtesy box or jewelry box of Italian origin (Florence), made in the pure artisanal tradition of the mid-20th century.
This box is distinguished by its bas-relief decoration made in "gesso" (stucco), creating a rich texture across the entire structure. The lid features a famous mythological scene, the "Dance of the Muses", taken from Andrea Mantegna's painting Le Parnasse. The image is integrated into the wood with a finishing technique that gives it relief effects and remarkable visual depth.
Gold leaf gilding shows natural wear and fine crazing from desiccation, offering an authentic "Antique Florence" patina highly sought after by collectors.
Origin: Florence, Italy.
Period: Circa 1940 - 1950.
Materials: Wood, gesso prep, gold leaf gilding.
Dimensions: 10 x 7 x 4.3 cm.
Weight: 65 grams (wooden frame made of balsa or poplar, typical for its lightness).
Signature: Workshop signature visible at the bottom of the central iconography (similar to "Torlevia").
Condition:
The item is in beautiful vintage condition. The craquelure on the gilding is a sign of natural aging of the stucco on wood and is not a defect, but proof of age. Original interior.
