Description from the seller

Short sword "ntsoko" Saka/Ngandu
Congo DRC
Total length: 49.5 cm
Period: early 20th century
Materials: wrought iron, wood, iron plates and red copper, red copper wire
Provenance: ex collection Westerdijk - Netherlands

The Ntsoko short sword comes from the northeast of the Mongo world: the Ngandu, the Saka, the Lalia and the Kuru. The smiths of this Mongo complex produced a wide variety of leaf-shaped knives; this specimen resembles more a spearhead. Used mainly as a prestige weapon, they can also be used in combat. Peter Westerdijk states that these knives "were in possession of every adult man among the Saka and their neighbors" (Jan Elsen, "Iron and Pride" - 2003; Peter Westerdijk, "African Metal Implements" - 1984).
