Georg Handsch’s half‑bust portrait of botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli, titled Petri Andreae Matthioli effigies, from 1565 in Italy, in Latin, one copy, in very good condition with a water stain in the lower right corner and slight browning, with notable later colouring.
Description from the seller
Portrait of the botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli, painted by his friend and Bohemian physician Georg Handsch.
In the middle of the sixteenth century, the Sienese Mattioli was in Prague at the Habsburg court of Ferdinand I, serving as personal physician to his son. In 1561 Handsch entered his service, and it is in these years that the portrait should be dated.
The title surrounds the half‑bust drawing of Mattioli, while references to the Habsburgs, to botany, and to the Italian’s book on plants embellish his likeness, which shows him now sixty years old.
The sheet measures 34 x 23.4 cm; the condition is not very good, only for a water stain in the lower right corner and for a light browning. Notable is the coloring applied later.
Careful and prompt shipment in a rigid protective tube.
