Muonionalusta is considered one of the oldest known iron meteorites on our planet with an age of about 4.6 billion years, and is thus a witness to the beginnings of our planetary system.

The Muonionalusta meteorite is classified as a fine octahedrite of type IVA and, in northern Scandinavia west of the border between Sweden and Finland, appeared about one million years BCE.
