ABOUT THE PRINT - Original graphic work signed on the plate. The numbering appears in the colophon of the folder, signed by hand by the artist, of which it was part. ABOUT THE ARTWORK Zao Wou-ki, the great Chinese painter based in Paris, has created a collection of 15 original colour lithographs based on a poetic text by the prestigious French writer Roger Caillois, entitled À la Gloire de l'image. ABOUT THE ARTIST Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013) was a Chinese-French painter who became one of the most important figures in postwar abstract art. Born in Beijing and trained at the Hangzhou School of Fine Arts, he moved to Paris in 1948, where he engaged with the European avant-garde and developed a distinctive style blending Chinese ink traditions with Western abstraction. Influenced by Paul Klee and later associated with the École de Paris, Zao evolved from semi-figurative works to large-scale lyrical abstractions characterized by dynamic brushwork and atmospheric depth. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he gained international recognition, exhibiting widely in Europe and the United States. His work entered major museum collections, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2002, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France. Zao Wou-Ki’s legacy lies in his pioneering synthesis of Eastern and Western artistic languages, which reshaped global modernism.
