Description from the seller
AQUARIUM is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. This work transforms a everyday scene into an almost dreamlike experience. A couple elegantly dressed contemplates a large aquarium while sharing an intimate meal, surrounded by fish suspended in a luminous blue that fills the entire composition. The scene has something cinematic and silent, like a moment paused in the middle of a conversation we never hear.
The chosen perspective places the viewer behind the characters, turning them into a discreet companion of the evening. We do not see full faces or direct expressions; everything is built through the posture of the bodies and the enveloping atmosphere. That decision adds mystery and makes the protagonism fall as much on the relationship between the figures as on the aquatic space that lies before them. The aquarium functions as a window into another world. The orange, violet, and pink fish drift slowly over the turquoise background, generating a hypnotic sense of calm. More than real animals, they seem thoughts or memories suspended in the water. The aquatic plants that frame the scene act almost like natural curtains, reinforcing the idea of intimate theater and a space protected from the outside.
The female figure, with her red printed dress and bare back, introduces a strong visual and emotional presence. The intense red of the fabric contrasts with the cool blues of the aquarium and becomes the painting’s warm focal point. Opposite her, the man dressed in dark attire provides balance and sobriety, creating an elegant dialogue between the two silhouettes.
The composition is carefully organized to generate depth without losing simplicity. The curved chairs, the small white table, and the barely suggested glasses situate the scene in a refined restaurant or salon, but the physical space ultimately dissolves, absorbed by the underwater world. That ambiguity between interior humanity and aquatic landscape is one of the poem-like keys of the work.
“Aquarium” speaks of contemplation, of shared intimacy, and of the strange distance that sometimes exists even in moments that are close. There is in the painting a sense of elegant silence, of slow time, and of suspended beauty. The work turns a seemingly simple dinner into a scene charged with mystery, nostalgia, and visual delicacy.
