Thai ceremonial khantok in black and gold lacquer, from Lanna art in Thailand dating to 1990–2000, handmade mango wood with a glossy black finish and gold decoration, diameter 30.5 cm and height 16.5 cm, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Thai ceremonial khantok in black and gold lacquer – Lanna Art – Thailand, 20th century
Mysterious in conception and refined in execution, this extraordinary Thai khantok represents one of the most fascinating expressions of the ancient lacquer art of northern Thailand. Inspired by the spiritual traditions of the Lanna people and Buddhist ceremonies, the piece combines decorative value, ritual symbolism, and artisanal mastery.
Hand-turned mango wood forms an elegant structure supported by central columns and a spectacular gold decoration executed according to the traditional technique “lai rot nam,” an ancient manual engraving and gilding process. The contrast between the glossy black background and the gold ornamental motifs creates a staging effect of great visual impact—highly decorative and sophisticated.
Lacquer work requires numerous manual steps: successive layers of natural resin and artisanal polishing give the surface depth, shine, and a nearly mirror-like presence. A piece with strong character, capable of enhancing sophisticated interiors, oriental, colonial, or contemporary spaces with a refined taste.
Perfect as a dramatic center table centerpiece, decorative stand, or important display furniture element.
Dimensions: diameter 30.5 cm; height 16.5 cm.
Good overall conservational condition. There are slight and small color losses along the lower edge, visible in the photos and compatible with age and use, without compromising the overall elegance of the work.
The photos are an integral part of the description. Guaranteed careful packaging entrusted to industry professionals.
