Mid‑century modern chalkware 3D relief wall plate titled Bergdorp in reliëf, dating roughly 1945–1955, made in the United Kingdom, signed by E.W. Usher D.A., measuring 30 cm square with 4 cm depth and about 1.4–1.5 kg, multicoloured with two tiny chips and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful relief board (3D board). The board has a diameter of about 30 cm and a depth of approximately 4 cm. The weight is almost 1.5 kg.
The board appears to be ceramic, but given the two very small chips (see photos) revealing a white color underneath, it is likely chalkware. During the mid-century modern period (1945-1965), chalk art flourished as a cheap and expressive medium for the home, meeting a wide range of tastes and decorative needs with table lamps, figurines, wall decorations, and tourist souvenirs. Chalk art attracted both talented and amateur artists and reached a broad audience during the mid-century modern period, with offerings ranging from images of European sculpture to kitschy depictions of exotic travel, cartoon figures, and light humor.
This board depicts a village scene and is signed (see photo). The artist’s name is E.W. Usher D.A. The D.A. stands for an academic degree in art, specifically the Diploma of Art from the Manchester Municipal School of Art, where he studied in the 1930s and 1940s. Edward William (Teddy) Usher was a British artist of the 20th century, known for his three-dimensional (3D) chalkware wall plaques and paintings. He exhibited in the 1940s at the "Manchester Academy of Fine Arts." His works, often signed as "E.W. Usher," depict English landscapes, cottages, and castles, and were produced around the 1940s-1950s.
This board probably dates from the period 1945–1955 and was made in the United Kingdom.
The board has a somewhat kitschy appearance, but in that sense it is also a very beautiful decorative object!
The board will be carefully packed and insured for shipping.
