Description from the seller

Scarce. First and only edition. Creswell family copy, connected to the publisher. The sole known publication of Abbott (1730–1776), a Church of England clergyman. The subscriber list includes Isaac Hawkins Browne, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, and Charles Jennens - patron of the arts and librettist - to whom the work is dedicated. The preface offers a substantial discussion of poetic aesthetics, particularly accent and metre. Contents include poems on “The Song of Deborah and Barak,” hymns, marriage tributes, an ode to good humour, translations, verses on Moses, and a reprinting of Addison’s “On Liberty.” Rubbing to the boards; occasional water-staining. Nottingham Reference Library bookplate to front pastedown.

[14], 32 pp., v, 143pp.
