An English sterling silver commemorative cup (925) dating from circa 1902, with a multi-lobed Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau body, hand-chased floral panels, stylised side handles and four spherical feet, an interior dragon engraving, and original hand-engraved inscriptions including “The King’s Birthday 1902”; dimensions 37.5 cm wide by 13.5 cm high by 30 cm deep, weight 1451 g, in good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Large English commemorative cup in sterling silver 925, made in the early years of the 20th century and datable to around 1902.
The piece features a multi-lobed, highly striking structure, enriched by refined hand-embossed panels with floral motifs in a British Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau style. The stylized side handles and the four spherical feet give the composition an extremely elegant and uncommon sculptural character.
Particularly rare and fascinating is the inner base, completely engraved with a serpent-like dragon creature immersed among stylized waves, a decorative detail with a strong Symbolist and Neo-Celtic taste that makes the piece very different from ordinary English silverware of the period.
The upper rim bears original hand-engraved commemorative inscriptions, including the inscription: “The King’s Birthday 1902” as well as period dedicatory initials, an element suggesting a probable celebratory or institutional British commission.
English hallmark for sterling silver 925.
High-quality British production, with an excellent level of craftsmanship and a notable weight of silver.
An object of great decorative and collectible impact, ideal for collectors of English silver, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, or Wunderkammer with an international taste.
Very good condition for its age, with normal light signs of wear compatible with over a century of history.
