Antique coal scuttle dating from circa 1900–1910, in dark wood with brass fittings, a removable metal inner liner and the original brass coal scoop with a wooden handle; dimensions 31 cm W x 33 cm H x 43 cm D, in good used condition with signs of age.
Description from the seller
A highly decorative antique coal scuttle, made of dark wood with elegant brass fittings and a graceful curved shape. The box contains a removable metal inner liner with side handles and comes with its original brass coal scoop with wooden handle.
The front is decorated with ornate brass appliqués, a brass knob and a stylish brass carrying handle on top. The warm colour of the wood, visible signs of age and beautiful patina give this piece a strong sense of authenticity and charm.
This type of coal box, also known as a coal scuttle, was originally used beside the fireplace for storing coal. Today, it also makes a beautiful decorative interior piece, for example as a log holder, magazine box or atmospheric object near a fireplace.
Origin and period
The exact origin cannot be determined with certainty. Based on the design, materials and finish, this piece is presumably Western European, possibly English or Dutch. Its style corresponds well with late Victorian or Edwardian fireplace accessories from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1900.
