Description from the seller
Title: Tavern Scene
School: Dutch (19th century)
Author: David Teniers, follower of
Style: Baroque genre scene
Technique: Oil on canvas
The work depicts an interior scene, typically Baroque in character, set in a rural tavern, where a group of peasants gathers around a table to take part in a card game. The composition is narrative and genre- scene in nature, showing figures dressed in popular attire of the period, captured in relaxed, everyday attitudes. The lighting, soft but directed, emphasizes the central core of the action, creating a contrast with the darker, deeper background.
To the right, the space opens onto an exterior landscape that adds depth to the scene, while in the background a musician is discerned, adding dynamism and reinforcing the festive atmosphere. The brushwork is precise and detailed, especially in the faces and ordinary objects, reflecting the clear influence of the circle around David Teniers, known for his interest in genre scenes and peasant life.
The work shows restorations, in keeping with its age, and has been re-lined, which guarantees its structural stability.
The frame is carved and gilded wood, in a classical style, with rich relief decoration based on vegetative motifs and scrolls. It features a wide molding with continuous ornamental work, contributing visual richness and enhancing the historical character of the work.
