Description from the seller

Large Polychrome Figure - Mary with Child & the Serpent - Signed 'LD' - 43 cm

A magnificent and imposing religious statue of the Holy Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. This statue, standing a substantial 43 cm tall, is a striking example of European devotional art from the late 19th or early 20th century.

This particular model depicts Mary as the 'New Eve'. At her feet the serpent is visible, which she treads underfoot as a symbol of victory over original sin and evil (Genesis 3:15). The Child Jesus rests safely in her arms and holds the Orb, symbolizing his dominion over creation.

The statue is marked on the back/base with the initials 'LD', indicating a specific foundry or artist from the period.
Polychrome painted in the classic liturgical colors: a sky-blue mantle with gold stars and a softly yellow robe. The golden borders and details give the statue a rich appearance.

Made from high-quality polychromed plaster, typical of the ateliers that supplied statues to monasteries and well-to-do individuals of the time.

The statue is in nice vintage condition with a beautiful, authentic patina. There are light signs of age in the paint and the plaster (see photos), which adds to the historical character and the piece's integrity.
