Description from the seller
Fernand ELCHINGER (1911-1975) — Large polychrome faience plate
Stylized bird pattern on a bright red background, signed beneath the base.
Dimensions: H. 6 cm – L. 48 cm – D. 27 cm.
In the STYLE of Roger CAPRON
An emblematic piece of Fernand Elchinger’s work, this large polychrome faience plate attracts with the strength of its graphic design and the intensity of its colors. The artist presents a stylized bird motif with clean black lines, inspired by folk art and the modernist explorations of the 1950s–1970s. The contrast between the vivid red glaze and the almost calligraphic drawing gives the piece a remarkable decorative presence.
Originating from the famous Alsace ceramist dynasty, Fernand Elchinger ran the family factory in Soufflenheim while developing a personally recognizable body of work. His oeuvre blends Alsatian artisanal tradition with contemporary aesthetics, in a spirit close to the great French ceramists of the 20th century. His creations, often adorned with stylized animals, abstract motifs, or geometric compositions, are now sought after for their timeless modernity.
This plate perfectly illustrates the Elchinger style:
- Free, organic forms,
- Graphic pattern inspired by nature,
- Deep yet luminous glazes,
- Influence of 1950s–70s design.
A strong decorative piece, ideal in a vintage, modernist, or contemporary interior, and suitable for display as a centerpiece or as wall decor.
Condition: very good overall condition with signs of wear; contact points under the plate; small chip at the tip of the plate; see photo; signature under the base.
Authentic collectible piece.
