Hair ornament (2) - Japan

Japanese Lacquer Kushi & Kogai Set – Black Lacquer with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay & Gold Makie – Chrysanthemum & Peony – Meiji/Taisho Era – Original Wooden Box A beautifully crafted Japanese hair ornament set comprising a kushi (comb) and kogai, decorated with an intricate combination of raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and gold makie (lacquer sprinkled with gold powder) on a black lacquer ground. The kushi features a dense floral composition of chrysanthemums (kiku) and peonies (botan), rendered in glowing iridescent mother-of-pearl and rich gold makie against the black lacquer. The detail and density of the inlay work is exceptional, with individual petals and leaves carefully shaped and fitted. The kogai is decorated en suite with matching floral motifs on both ends. Both pieces are presented in their original lacquered wooden storage box, which itself shows honest age patina consistent with a Meiji to Taisho period piece. CONDITION The comb and kogai are in good overall condition. Minor surface scratches and age-related wear are present, consistent with their age. The raden inlay is largely intact. Please refer to all photographs for a complete picture of condition. DIMENSIONS Comb (kushi): approx. 10 cm wide Kogai: approx. 16.5 cm long PROVENANCE Acquired from a private collection in Kyoto, Japan. Ships from Japan (Kyoto) via EMS or FedEx with full tracking and careful packaging. Import duties are the buyer's responsibility.
