A Japanese kushi (comb) and kogai hair ornament set in black lacquer with raden mother‑of‑pearl inlay, featuring a bird and floral design from the Meiji–Taisho era, in good condition with minor wear and housed in its original red fabric‑covered box.
Description from the seller
Japanese Lacquer Kushi & Kogai Set – Black Lacquer with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay – Bird & Floral Design – Meiji/Taisho Era – Original Box
A beautifully crafted Japanese hair ornament set comprising one kushi (comb) and one kogai, all decorated with intricate raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) on a black lacquer ground.
The kushi features a richly detailed composition of a bird perched among cherry blossoms and foliage, with individual petals, leaves, and berries carefully shaped and inlaid in iridescent mother-of-pearl. The colours shift between white, green, blue and pink depending on the angle of light — a hallmark of fine raden craftsmanship. The two kogai are decorated en suite with delicate floral motifs on both ends.
The set is housed in its original red fabric-covered presentation box, which shows honest age patina consistent with a Meiji to Taisho period piece.
CONDITION
The kushi and kogai are in good overall condition. Minor surface scratches and age-related wear are present. Some minor lifting of raden inlay is noted on the kushi — please refer to all photographs for a complete picture of condition.
DIMENSIONS
Kushi (comb): approx. 9.5 cm wide
Kogai: approx. 16.7 cm long
PROVENANCE
Acquired from a private collection in Kyoto, Japan.
Ships from Japan (Kyoto) via EMS or FedEx with full tracking and careful packaging. Import duties are the buyer's responsibility.
