Chess and backgammon set in oak wood with pine veneer, from France, dating to 1910–1920, in a 36 × 26 × 8 cm box, in good overall condition.
Description from the seller
Exceptional chess set box, dwarf in yellow and early 20th century backgammon, made of oak wood with pine veneer and brass fittings. Green felt interiors. Early 20th century, France. Compendium of games "Les Jojoux du Père Noël".
The box is generally in good condition, with wear and some loosening in the veneer area of the chessboard. The corners of the piece, in dovetail joints, are fine though somewhat loose. The interior felt is worn and some of the yellow dwarf’s small boxes seem to have been glued back together. The pieces for the Checkers and Backgammon are in good condition, though a couple show slight cracks. The chess set is complete in terms of pieces, although the two black rooks appear to differ slightly from the rest in design (slightly). The instructions and various boards are in good condition though worn. See the photos to get a proper idea of the set’s condition.
Weight: 1500 grams. It has been cleaned of surface dirt and waxed. The patina has not been touched beyond removing obvious dirt.
- The Chess set is complete in terms of pieces.
- The Checkers are complete in terms of pieces.
- Backgammon is complete in terms of pieces.
- The yellow dwarf lacks the pieces of different shapes and colors.
- The rest of the games, I don’t know if they are complete.
The box measures 36 cm long, 26 cm wide and 8 cm high.
A unique, rare and exceptionally special item. Given its fragility and age, it seems a small miracle that it still exists.
Shipped with certification and insured by Correos España, UPS or INPOST, depending on destination country.
