Description from the seller
Buddha
Kingdom of Ayutthaya, late 18th century
Thailand
Bronze
Height: 40 cm
This statue represents the seated Buddha taking the earth witnesses to testify. The serene face, with half-closed eyes and a slight smile, illustrates the aesthetic and spiritual ideal of Ayutthaya art, marked by a pursuit of harmony and interiority. The coiffure consists of small stylized curls topped by a flame (ushnisha), an iconographic element characteristic of representing transcendental wisdom. The slender body, finely sketched monastic robe, and balanced proportions testify to the refinement of Thai sculpture. The tiered base evokes a sacred throne, reinforcing the ritual dimension of the piece.
At the end of the Ayutthaya period, the style is characterized by a simplification of volumes and a certain softness of features, contrasting with the more rigid forms of earlier periods. Faces become rounder and more expressive, with a subtle and serene smile. The silhouettes gain in suppleness and the handling of the drapery remains sober and fluid. This evolution will translate into an increased pursuit of spiritual elegance, heralding the stylistic developments of the next era, that of Rattanakosin.
Condition: Missing parts, cracks, breaks. Good condition for its age.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
