Description from the seller
Pair of Amsterdam School Bookends, Studio van Vlijmen, Dated 1925
A beautiful pair of Amsterdam School bookends in polished wood, dated 1925 and retaining the original studio label to the underside, most probably reading Studio van Vlijmen, Holland.
The design is wonderfully architectural. Each bookend is built as a small stepped composition of rounded vertical forms, with a darker curved front element and three short horizontal bars cutting across it. The result is very much in the Amsterdam School spirit: geometric, expressive, crafted with care, yet never stiff. The pieces have the feel of miniature stylised architectural fragments.
The warm polished wood gives the pair a rich, honey-brown tone, with subtle variation in grain and colour. The construction plays beautifully with rhythm and depth: high and low planes, rounded corners, curved fronts and small projecting bars. Placed on a shelf, desk or sideboard, they bring just the right amount of 1920s Dutch Art Deco character.
One bookend is marked by hand with the date 1925 and both carry the original paper studio label. The label appears to read “Studio van Vlijmen, Holland”, although it is partially worn, so this is stated with some caution.
A rare and highly decorative pair, perfect for an Amsterdam School, Art Deco or modernist interior, but equally strong in a contemporary setting where the warm wood and sculptural silhouette can stand out.
