Description from the seller
Sade (Marquis de) - One Hundred Period Engravings to Illustrate Sade - Black Sun - Undated
This edition constitutes the separate print of the illustrations destined for the Marquis's major work. The collection comprises 100 hors-texte illustrations, reproducing the original engravings from the end of the 18th century.
Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740-1814) is a man of letters, a French novelist and philosopher whose work explores themes of transgression, pain, and atheism. He wrote his most famous texts, including the Justine and Juliette saga, during his long stays in custody at the Bastille and at Vincennes, using literature as a space of absolute freedom in the face of confinement.
The original illustrator of the 1797 edition remains anonymous, although art historians often attribute these compositions to artists such as Bornet or Binet (18th century).
