FIAT LUX by J V C, 2nd edition (1662) in English with a full leather binding, 404 pages, 15 x 10 cm, on the religion topic and in good condition.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a controversial book: "FIAT LUX" translated as: Let there be light!; printed in 1662, barely two years after King Charles II regained the throne following the chaos and bloodshed of the English Civil War and Cromwell's dictatorship.
THE AUTHOR UNDER THE SHadows: Signed cryptically under the initials "Mr. J V C.", the real author was John Vincent Canes (died 1672), a brave Franciscan friar and Catholic apologist who operated in an England where being a Roman Catholic was exceedingly dangerous. He wittily describes himself on the title page as "a friend of men of all religions."
In an era when Papists (Catholics), Protestants, Presbyterians, and Independents were literally killing each other, Canes published this book boldly calling for "tolerance and charity." But his true aim was much sharper: to demonstrate that the endless Protestant divisions only brought bloodshed and upheaval, and that the only way to restore peace in the Kingdom was to look again toward the Church of Rome.
PROVOKED THE WRATH OF THE PURITANS: This book made so much noise in 1662 English society that the great Puritan theologian and leader John Owen had to write entire treatises (such as his famous Animadversions) just to try to refute our brilliant and slippery "Mr. J V C."
This is the 2nd EDITION, which was revised and expanded by the author himself, making it the definitive and most mature version of his bold political thought.
PUBLICATION YEAR: England 1662. 2nd EDITION
LANGUAGE: English (Original Version)
SIZE AND PAGINATION: Dimensions: 15 x 10 cm. Pagination: Title page + [6] + 396 pp. COMPLETE WORK
