“The health and well-being guide of medieval princes”
In the late Middle Ages, princes and the powerful learned the rules of hygiene and health of rational medicine thanks to the Tacuinum Sanitatis. This treatise on well-being, widely distributed in the 14th and 15th centuries, was written in Arabic by Ibn Butlân, a Christian physician born in Baghdad. Each folio is illuminated with a miniature illustrating foods, plants and human behaviors beneficial to health. The original is kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
