Rare Art Portfolio: Chinese Shadow Puppets (北京皮影), Peking 1953

I am offering a highly interesting and increasingly hard-to-find publication, Chinese Shadow Puppets, published in 1953 by People’s Art Publishing House, Peking (人民美术出版社).

This is a large-format art portfolio featuring a set of 15 striking full-color reproductions of traditional Chinese shadow puppets. The publication offers an authentic insight into the rich tradition of Beijing shadow theatre and is especially sought after by collectors of Asian art, graphic works, and historical prints.

year: 1953
publisher: People’s Art Publishing House, Peking
size: approx. 52 × 38 cm (20.5 × 15 in)
contents: bound plates with color illustrations
condition: very good, well-preserved, see photos

The portfolio is in very nice collectible condition, without major damage, showing only minor signs of age consistent with its vintage. Due to the large format and long-term horizontal storage, some plates show slight, gentle waviness in the central area. This is not caused by moisture, but is a natural effect of the paper size and storage over time, and does not detract from the visual quality.

Original 1953 edition.

Due to its large size, shipping costs are slightly higher than usual.
