Orientalist photograph from the Lehnert & Landrock studio “Tunis Déposé” No. 861 with a contemporaneous frame – early 1900s.
DESCRIPTION
Fascinating orientalist photograph attributed to the historic photography studio Lehnert & Landrock, renowned for images taken in Tunisia, North Africa and Egypt in the early decades of the 20th century.
The photograph bears the inscription: “Tunis Déposé” and archive number 861.
The work depicts a scene of everyday North African life at a water point, with figures and animals in a typical desert/Maghreb context, a subject very characteristic of Lehnert & Landrock’s output.
Present contemporaneous frame with on the back indication: “Ermanno Baldisserai fu Gustavo – Via Po 37 A Roma.”
Frame dimensions approx.: 19 x 25 cm.
Conditions consistent with age: signs of time and a small stain visible in the upper left part, as shown in the photo.
Lehnert & Landrock were among the most important Orientalist photography studios of the early 20th century, active mainly in Tunis and highly regarded today by collectors of historical photography, colonialism, orientalism and period decorative art.
