Vintage Japanese lacquered wood jewelry box from circa 1950s–1960s, with a TOYO-mechanism ballerina, red velvet interior, four integrated feet, a front silvered metal closure, and dimensions about 19 cm long, 10.5 cm high, and 12 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Splendid vintage music jewelry box from the era (circa 1950s/1960s), a classic of export Japanese craftsmanship. The piece features a refined glossy black lacquer finish, hand-decorated with traditional oriental motifs.
Exterior:
The lid and front are adorned with detailed landscape scenes including the iconic Mount Fuji, pagodas, traditional bridges, Japanese pines and small boats. The decorations are rendered in vibrant colors (gold, green, blue and red), typical of the period Chinoiserie style.
The case rests on four integrated feet and features a front closure in silvered metal.
Interior:
Lifting the lid reveals an interior lined in soft red velvet, divided into several compartments for rings and jewelry. The inside of the lid houses a three-panel mirror arrangement that creates a striking depth effect.
The heart of the jewelry box is a classical ballerina with a white tulle tutu who, once the mechanism is wound, spins on her own to the rhythm of the music (Toyo mechanism).
Technical Characteristics:
Origin: Made in Japan (original sticker present on the bottom).
Musical mechanism: Marked "TOYO" on the winding key.
Materials: Lacquered wood, velvet, mirrors, metal.
Dimensions: Length: about 19 cm
Height: about 10.5 cm
Depth: about 12 cm
Conditions:
The item is in good vintage condition. The lacquer retains a nice gloss with minimal signs of wear consistent with its age. The musical mechanism and the ballerina’s movement are functioning. The inner velvet is well preserved. Please review the photos carefully, as they are an integral part of the description.
