Description from the seller
From Madagascar’s lemurs to Bornean orangutans – a magnificently illustrated panorama of the primate world of the Victorian era.
Publisher: London, Edward Lloyd, 1896-97. XIV + 286 pages, XIV + 302 pages with 41 (of 41) finely colored plates and 8 colored maps. Original cloth bindings with gilt spine, ex libris. 18 x 12 cm.
------------------------------------------------
Decorative zoological depiction of the primate world from the famous series “Lloyd’s Natural History,” edited by the eminent ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe. The renowned naturalist Henry Ogg Forbes here combines the then-current knowledge about monkeys, lemurs, and apes with a remarkably vivid and scientifically grounded presentation.
Particularly appealing are the numerous colored plates, which show lemurs, galagos, capuchin monkeys, macaques, guenons, and orangutans in striking natural portraits. The fine coloring and detailed execution lend the work not only scientific but also high aesthetic value, making it a classic example of Victorian natural history illustration.
Henry O. Forbes was director of the Liverpool Museums and was regarded as one of the leading explorers of his time. His works on the animal realms of Southeast Asia and the Pacific gained international attention and lend the work additional scientific-historical significance.
From the library of the English bibliophile Arthur Henry Bennett (Leicester) with decorative Victorian ex libris.
------------------------------------------------
Binding lightly rubbed, otherwise a very clean copy.
