Japanese lacquerware Bunbako document box with Sazanka Maki-e floral motifs on a red ground, featuring gold, white and green decoration, signed Shitsuga Sankyū, dating to 1970–1990, 33 cm high, 22.5 cm wide, 6.5 cm deep, made of lacquerware on wood, in unused condition with the original storage box.
Description from the seller
An elegant Japanese lacquerware document box, or 文箱 (Bunbako), decorated with refined 山茶花 (Sazanka) floral motifs executed in 蒔絵 (Maki-e) style. The rich deep red lacquer ground beautifully complements the gold, white, and green floral decoration, creating a graceful seasonal composition associated with traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Signed 漆画山久 (Shitsuga Sankyū), the piece reflects the decorative lacquer artistry popular in the late Shōwa period, combining practical function with ornamental craftsmanship. The spacious interior was designed for storing letters, documents, calligraphy paper, or personal items, making it suitable both as a collector’s display object and as an elegant utility piece.
Preserved in unused condition with the original storage box. Minor age-related wear and stains are present on the outer box due to long-term storage. A tasteful example of vintage Japanese lacquer craftsmanship appealing to collectors of 和風工芸 (Wafū Kōgei) and traditional interior objects.
