Meiji-period Japanese Kutani porcelain plate (1868–1912), diameter 40.5 cm, with red backmark 'Dai Nippon Kutani Zo' for export, in excellent condition with minor wear.
Description from the seller
Large Japanese Kutani plate from the Meiji period (1868-1912), with the red mark on the back “Dai Nippon Kutani Zo” meaning “Made in the Great Japan – Kutani”.
This mark, intended for the Western export market, places the piece in the great period of Japonisme at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.
The design, entirely hand-painted, depicts an elegant court scene in a flowering garden, animated by two refined female figures dressed in rich kimonos.
The composition is framed by a substantial polychrome border alternating geometric motifs, fer-red reserves and abundant hand-applied gilding.
The piece displays a palette typical of fine-quality Kutani export productions: deep iron reds, emerald greens, strongly defined contour blacks and numerous delicate gold highlights.
The treatment of the faces, the finesse of the floral motifs and the decorative richness attest to careful workshop craftsmanship aimed at a Western clientele sensitive to Japonisme aesthetics during the Belle Époque.
Dimensions:
• Diameter: 30.5 cm
• Height: 5 cm
Condition:
Very good overall condition with minor wear and light traces of time consistent with the piece’s age.
Gold accents still well-present and the decoration particularly luminous.
A large decorative piece representative of Meiji export Japanese art, with strong visual presence, ideal for a Japonisme collection, a cabinet of curiosities or a refined wall display.
