Cassapanca - Wood - geometric chip-carving

A striking, large hand-carved wooden dowry chest (cassapanca) or marriage storage trunk, crafted in traditional Moorish / North African vernacular style, dating to the mid-20th century (circa 1930–1950). Measuring an impressive 86 cm in width, this substantial piece showcases extensive, intricate geometric chip-carving (intaglio) across the entire front and side panels, featuring repeating multi-pointed star medallions and interlocking lattice motifs characteristic of regional Maghrebi folk art. The robust architecture is reminiscent of traditional high-backed benches, anchored by sturdy squared corner posts topped with elegant pyramidal finials. The arched side panels are detailed with openwork circular piercings, which add visual lightness and serve as robust, built-in handles for moving the trunk. The heavy hinged top lid opens smoothly to reveal a very spacious storage compartment, retaining remnants of an old green pigment finish on its inner lip, adding to its rustic authenticity. With its generous dimensions and commanding presence, this trunk serves beautifully as an authentic statement coffee table, an entry hall bench, or a sophisticated blanket chest at the foot of a bed, effortlessly infusing warmth and Mediterranean history into any interior layout. The chest is in good rustic vintage condition. It shows an authentic, deep warm patina and natural signs of wear consistent with age, including surface scuffs, historical wood shrinkage splits, and minor blunted edges on the carvings, all of which enhance its genuine antique character. The structural joinery and heavy timber framing remain thoroughly sound, solid, and stable. weight 13,8 kg
