A vintage Staunton chess set from the Netherlands dating to 1980–2000, comprising 32 boxwood pieces (16 natural, 16 black polished) with a beech-framed board and a matching wooden box, all in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Beautiful vintage chess set consisting of 32 chess pieces packed in a luxurious wooden box with a hinged lid and including a chessboard. The chess pieces are turned from boxwood, 16 are natural and the other 16 are black polished. To prevent damage to the chessboard, the bases of the pieces are fitted with red felt. The squares on the chessboard and the draughtboard have dark brown and white squares, and along the sides are the letters a to h and the numbers 1 to 8; for stability this chessboard has a beech wood frame. The wooden storage box features a mortise-and-tenon joint at the four corners; this construction provides extra strength to the box. The design of these chess pieces is attributed to Nathaniel Cooke, and they bear the name of the British chess player Howard Staunton, who popularized the use of this model. Dimensions: chessboard 42.5 cm x 42.5 cm x 1.3 cm, the pieces vary in height from 4 cm to 8.2 cm, and the box measures 21 cm x 17 cm x 6 cm. Total weight: 1666 grams. The chess pieces, the chessboard and the box are in very good condition for their age, with minor signs of use appropriate to their age and use. Carefully packed and sent by registered mail with track and trace.
