Pewter/Tin, Coconut - China - 20th century

Chinese-origin Asian folk-art teapot on a pedestal. This teapot is made of tin and a coconut. It is a metal traditionally used in China (notably in the Swatow / Shantou region) for tea vessels. The folding handles are metal. The central bulging part is made from a finely carved coconut. The tin has a beautiful aged patina from use. Note two small slits at the base of the coconut (see the photographs). The coconut is an organic material that changes over time. Cracks are often seen on these models.
