Description from the seller
It is a piece presented as a small ceremonial chest, worked in soft wood and conceived in the second half of the 20th century as a modern reinterpretation of medieval chests with religious themes. Its presence is commanding: at 46 cm long, it has an almost architectural air, as if it were a devotional model carved in relief.
The surface is completely covered with narrative reliefs, organized into panels separated by columns and arches, following the logic of a Romanesque or late Gothic frieze reinterpreted with contemporary freedom. The figures —some in a praying stance, others in scenes of sacred intimacy— have that naive, expressive modeling typical of the craft workshops of the 20th century that sought to recover the aesthetics of the old without copying it literally. The faces are schematic, the folds of the tunics are resolved with deep, direct lines, and the composition conveys solemnity without losing a touch of tenderness.
The wood, with a soft grain and open pores, has been worked to leave a matte, earthly finish that recalls baked clay or Castilian popular imagery. The lid, slightly raised and crowned with small volumes, reinforces the sense of a ritual chest, as if it held relics or small objects of devotion.
Taken together, it is a piece that blends craftsmanship, religiosity, and historical evocation, a object designed to decorate with symbolic power rather than for real liturgical use. Its size and the richness of the reliefs make it a chest with sculptural presence, one of those that fills a room with its very texture.
