Description from the seller
Material: Wood / Urushi lacquer / Gold leaf finish
Origin: Echizen, Japan
Period: Late Shōwa
Condition:
As new condition. Very well preserved with no significant signs of use. The lacquer surface retains its original gloss and the gold-leaf decoration remains bright and attractive.
───────
This elegant Japanese lacquerware fubako (文箱, document box) was produced in the tradition of Echizen lacquerware (越前漆器), one of Japan’s most respected lacquer-producing regions.
Crafted from wood and finished in deep black urushi lacquer, the lid is decorated with a broad band of gold leaf featuring a refined depiction of pine trees (松). The composition is intentionally minimalist, combining the contrast of glossy black lacquer with the warm brilliance of gold to create a calm and sophisticated appearance.
The finely textured vertical surface treatment adds visual depth while maintaining a restrained aesthetic characteristic of modern Japanese lacquerware. Pine trees have long been regarded as symbols of longevity, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese decorative arts, making the design both elegant and auspicious.
The interior is finished in smooth black lacquer, providing a practical and visually harmonious space for storing documents, letters, photographs, or other treasured items.
The piece remains in exceptionally well-preserved condition and is accompanied by its original packaging and documentation.
Echizen lacquerware has been designated as a traditional craft of Japan and is renowned for its durable construction and refined lacquer finishing techniques.
