Description from the seller
Sculpture / bust "Gladiator", Concrete, circa 1920 - France
Gladiator bust made around 1920 in patinated cement, inspired by Italian historicist models from the late 19th century and clearly indebted to the theatrical compositions popularized by Italian sculptor Richard Aurili. The work represents a warrior of Antiquity with a heroic bearing, conceived with intense expressive force and a pronounced decorative sense, characteristics of historicist sculpture of academic tradition.
The figure appears slightly turned to the right, with a firm and melancholic gaze, conveying a sense of contained nobility and romantic drama. The facial modeling, with defined features and pronounced cheekbones, is treated with great sculptural sensitivity, while the closed mouth and severe gesture reinforce the epic character of the representation. The head is crowned with a spectacular Greco-Roman-inspired helmet, equipped with wide side wings and topped by an ornate vertical crest, an element that gives verticality and dynamism to the whole.
The bare torso reveals a powerful and synthetic anatomy, with firm musculature, enriched by ornamental details such as the shoulder guard decorated with scales and the cross band across the chest. The intentional fragmentation of the bust, with abrupt cuts and an archaeological appearance, evokes excavated sculpture remnants of classical Antiquity, a resource highly valued in Belle Époque decorative sculpture.
This piece successfully combines the grandeur of Neoclassicism with the romantic sensibility typical of the turn of the century, offering an idealized vision of the ancient hero, symbol of strength, honor, and courage.
Dimensions: 84 x 54 x 36 cm.
