Description from the seller

Radha in a copper alloy cast by the lost-wax method and chased. The goddess Radha, wife of Krishna and goddess of gentleness and love. She is depicted jeweled, standing, with wide hips and a slender waist; her figure is sensual and sinuous, her ample bosom exposed, her hair combed back and gathered at the rear. A small silver moon-shaped ornament on the forehead and above it a small gold tilak. The love story of Radha and Krishna is a prominent theme in Indian art and literature, serving as a model of allegorical love to which everyone should aspire. Radha was Krishna’s favorite gopi (cowherd girl), and their love, symbolic of ecstasy between God and the human soul, has often been interpreted as the hope of union between humanity and the divine. A large and heavy bronze, in classical iconography, with refined casting and very well chased surfaces. Good condition, beautiful patina, height 26 cm. South India, second half of the 19th century. Insured shipping.
