PIERRE ALECHINSKY:
Pierre Alechinsky is one of the best-known Belgian artists of the twentieth century. He was born on 19 October 1927 in Brussels, in Schaerbeek, and grew into an internationally renowned painter, draftsman, printmaker and engraver. His work is known for the spontaneous lines, vivid colors and a nearly calligraphic style. He lived and worked primarily in France since 1951.
Alechinsky studied at La Cambre in Brussels, where he learned typography, illustration and graphic techniques. In the forties he joined the avant-garde movement CoBrA, together with artists such as Karel Appel and Asger Jorn. The name CoBrA refers to the cities Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The group opposed traditional art rules and wanted to return to spontaneity, fantasy and expression.
An important turning point in his career was his fascination with Japanese calligraphy. In the fifties he traveled to Japan, where he drew inspiration from the free movement of brush and ink. You can see this strongly reflected in his paintings: flowing lines, organic forms and a combination of abstraction and figuration. His works often resemble a visual handwriting.
Typical for Alechinsky are large central paintings with smaller drawings or “margins” around them, as if the main image is surrounded by comments or comic-like scenes. He often worked on paper rather than canvas, and later used a lot of acrylic paint because it better suited his fast, spontaneous way of painting.
His work today hangs in major international museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. He is regarded as one of the most important living Belgian artists.
