Description from the seller
Shizuoka Pot Still W First Edition – Gaia Flow Distilling Co. (55%)
The Shizuoka Pot Still W First Edition from Gaia Flow Distilling is a very character-driven Japanese single malt that showcases the influence of traditional direct-fire pot still distillation. This release is less about age and more about showcasing distillery style, raw spirit character, and the impact of equipment on flavour. Bottled at 55%, it has enough strength to carry both intensity and nuance.
Nose
Immediately expressive and slightly rustic in a distinctive way. The first impression is fresh green apple, pear, and citrus peel, layered with vanilla, barley sugar, and warm cereal notes.
The “Pot Still W” influence comes through as a slightly heavier, more textured spirit profile: a faint toasted grain, almost smoky-woody note (from direct firing), alongside subtle floral tones and fresh herbs. There is a natural, almost “new make + maturation” duality that makes the nose feel energetic and evolving.
Palate
Medium to full-bodied with a surprisingly rich texture for a young Japanese whisky. The arrival is sweet malt, apple juice, and pear drops, quickly followed by vanilla cream and biscuit sweetness.
Mid-palate introduces more structure: white pepper, ginger, and light oak spice, along with a gentle toasted character that hints at the direct-fire distillation method. There is also a subtle oily mouthfeel that gives it presence without heaviness.
The balance between fruit brightness and cereal depth is the key feature here.
Finish
Medium to long, clean but slightly warming. It fades through citrus zest, malt sweetness, and gentle oak spice, with a lingering grassy and lightly toasted grain note.
Conclusion
The Shizuoka Pot Still W First Edition is a technical and stylistic showcase whisky, highlighting how distillation method can shape character even more than age. It is vibrant, slightly rustic, and very expressive of fresh spirit married with early maturation.
Ideal for those who enjoy:
Japanese single malts focused on distillery technique and transparency
Fresh, grain-forward whiskies with structure and purity
Lightly rustic, craft-style modern whisky expressions
