Description from the seller
Important female Orientalist marble bust in Carrara marble and natural marbles in different tones, attributed to an Italian school of the second half of the 19th century, about 1860.
The work depicts a young woman veiled, with noble and elegant features, characterized by a contemplative gaze and a refined formal balance that recalls the great tradition of Italian 19th-century academic Orientalist sculpture.
The main body of the sculpture is carved from a substantial block of Carrara marble, entirely hand-sculpted with chisel technique. Particularly extraordinary is the treatment of the veil, characterized by deep, soft, and fluid folds, capable of creating refined light and transparency effects typical of works by master sculptors of the 19th century.
The composition is embellished with refined decorative elements in different varieties of natural marble: salmon-colored carved roses, finely worked green leaves, and a turned base in red marble.
The whole evokes the elegance of important Italian decorative productions with Grand Tour taste, highly valued by European aristocracy in the second half of the 19th century.
An exceptionally imposing piece with a considerable weight of about 40 kg.
Exceptional condition for its age: strong and stable structure, no structural cracks or major restorations visible. Only a very slight defect on a small corner of a green leaf (about 3–4 mm), in addition to minimal signs of age consistent with the artwork’s age.
Dimensions:
• Total height: 60 cm
• Head height: 21 cm
• Shoulder width: 38 cm
• Base height: 11 cm
• Base diameter: 18.5 cm
• Face width: 12 cm
• Weight: about 40 kg
Note: some photographs were taken outdoors in natural sunlight to highlight the marble’s brilliance, the quality of the polish, and the authentic rendering of colors and hand-sculpted details.
Shipping and collection:
If the buyer selects one of the shipping options already available with indicated price, the cost will remain unchanged as shown in the listing.
