But if this letter reaches you without further information, then I have been deployed, especially given reports that paratroopers have jumped—you’ve probably heard the news on the radio. It is a sudden crisis, and in this case a company must be mobilized immediately from several batteries, and I must command that battery.
My dearest wife! Do not worry if you do not hear from me for a while; that is due to the current circumstances. I remain utterly convinced that I will come through here unscathed and that after a victorious end to the war I will finally be able to have a happy marriage with you. Thank you for your immense, boundless love and for all the good you have done for me during this time.
