Description from the seller
Brutalist Knight Chest / Deck Chest – Hand-carved Solid Wood – Germany/Austria – circa 1960-1975
Very special and impressive brutalist folk art chest, completely hand-carved from solid wood and executed in a powerful Mid-Century Brutalist style.
The front shows a richly developed scene with knights on horseback, heraldic shields, Gothic arches and medieval symbolism. The relief is deeply carved and fully hand-worked, creating an impressive play of light, shadow and texture.
Across the entire surface the original chisel marks remain visible. This artisanal finish gives the chest a strong sculptural appearance that is characteristic of the brutalist art movement from the 1960s and 1970s.
The heavy construction, solid feet, rough hand-hewn top and original metal closure emphasize the authentic character of this object. The warm dark-brown patina has developed over many decades, giving the wood exceptional depth and appearance.
Probably manufactured in Germany or Austria, where such medieval-inspired folk art was particularly popular. The depiction of knights, coats of arms and Gothic architecture refers to the rich traditions of the Alpine region and southern Germany.
