Description from the seller
Old Mortar with Solid Bronze Pestle - Jacobean Decoration (Shells and Ribs)
Country of origin: Spain (The presence of scallop shells is a distinguishing feature of Jacobean iconography and the Spanish tradition).
Description of the lot: We offer at auction a splendid and heavy ancient mortar, accompanied by its original pestle (or mano).
The piece stands out for the striking and classic relief ornamentation that surrounds the bowl: a rhythmic design that alternates robust ribs (vertical nervures) with large pilgrim shells.
This type of motif gives it great historical and decorative character. The pestle, for its part, features an elegant turned design with moldings that facilitate grip and use.
(Note for you: If you decide to include the second smooth mortar visible in the photos, you can add here: The lot includes a second bell-shaped mortar with decoration of incised horizontal lines, also accompanied by its respective pestle).
Era: 19th Century.
Materials: Solid bronze
Condition: In very good state of preservation.
The pieces display a beautiful aged patina and the logical signs of use and wear on their interior that attest to their age and authenticity.
(Note: Interested parties are asked to examine the provided photographs carefully, as they form part of the description of the piece’s condition).
