Lovely Art Nouveau designed volume of this wonderfully illustrated book, with folding map, and 75 colour plates painted by Menpes
Scarce first edition and fascinating travel classic book in the original cloth bindings. The book is wonderfully illustrated with 75 striking full page colour plates, captioned on the tissue guards by Mortimer Menpes (Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1855 – 1938), was an Australian-born British painter, author, printmaker and illustrator). With text by Flora Annie Steel
Published by Adam and Charles Black, London, 1905. Publisher’s original in red cloth with a peacock design on the front and design printed in green and yellow ochre on the front and spine, titling blocked in gilt on the front and spine. Top page edges gilt.
Book Dimensions: 23 x 17 x 4 cm and Number of Pages: 216 including index 4 pages of list of books by the publisher.
Condition
External covers with some fading to edges, and light wear to corners, and minor rubbing to head and foot of the spine. Internally the book is in very good condition. No names or inscriptions. Pages are clean, with some foxing to first and last blank free endpaper pages, and occasional on the margin of some pages. The text is fresh. The attractive illustrations make this a truly beautiful title (Please see pictures).
