Description from the seller
Figurative silver mantel clock with a female allegorical figure – Historicism, German 13-lot silver case, movement signed Joseph Kugler in Vienna, circa 1870–1890
Exceptional and highly decorative figurative silver mantel clock in the Historicism style. A classically draped female figure in antique garb carries the round clock case with raised arms — a rare and artistically demanding motif.
The clock case, with a finely profiled and richly chased edge, rests gracefully on the figure’s arms. The dial shows Roman hour numerals and a decoratively radially structured center. The clock is wound via the original key attached to the base.
The sturdy, bell-shaped base with four sculptural paw feet is elaborately ornamented. The entire movement is made of solid 13-lot silver (812.5/1000). On the base there are the marks: master mark in an oval with a stylized monogram, rectangular 13-lot punch, and a small cloverleaf control mark. Stylistically and technically, this is a high-quality German work, as produced especially in Hanau and comparable workshop centers.
The movement is signed “Joseph Kugler in Wien” and is characterized by excellent quality: fusee chain-winding, richly engraved plate, elaborate balance bridge, and fine workmanship. A beautiful example of the combination of a Viennese movement with a German Historicism silver case.
A rare, extremely decorative and collectable object with strong presence, well suited as a representative mantle or table clock.
We deliberately have not tested the delicate movement, as we do not want to take any risk and wish to preserve the original condition as much as possible. Therefore, we cannot say with certainty whether the clock is currently running. The original key is attached to the base.
