AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Paré Buddha Statuette (Style Jambupati)
Burma, XVIIe siècle
Période Nyaungyan, Second Empire d'Ava
Bronze with traces of gilding and lacquer remnants.
Height: 19.5 cm

The Nyaungyan period (also called the Second Ava Empire), roughly spanning from 1597 to 1752, is a transitional and crucially refined phase for Burmese art. Stylistically, it shows a progressive codification of Buddhist iconography, marked by two main influences or currents, namely Ava and Arakan, the latter influencing the embellished Buddha.

This beautiful gilded bronze statuette depicts the Buddha seated in his sovereignly adorned form (often associated with the Jambupati legend), wearing a tall pointed crown with five dented fleurons, flanked by wide lateral fins. The face presents serene features, half-closed eyes incised beneath arched brows meeting the bridge of the nose, and a faint smile. The ears bear heavy earrings resting on the shoulders. The torso is adorned with a wide plastron necklace carved with beaded motifs, and the monastic drapery covers the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder partially visible beneath the jewelry.

Condition: The statuette shows a very beautiful patina from excavation and use, with substantial traces of original gilding on a lacquer ground. Traces of natural oxidation and mineralization (cuprite and malachite) are visible in places, notably at the base and in the crevices of the crown. The base is hollow, revealing an iron core and traces of the original foundry soil visible on the back. Breaks and losses to the central upper fin of the crown as well as the tip broken and missing. Normal wear to the gilding consistent with age.
