Nike is celebrated on occasions of victories in athletic or artistic competitions, but also in warfare. According to tradition it was the sculptor Archermo who first depicted her as "winged"; in fact the wooden image of Nike kept in the Temple of Athena in Athens lacked wings.

Secondo la tradizione fu lo scultore Archermo a rappresentarla per la prima volta come "alata", infatti l'immagine di Nike lignea conservata nel tempio di Atena, ad Atene, era priva di ali.
