Description from the seller
An important ethnographic and geographical study from the late 19th century, intended for the instruction of families and schools.
DELON (Charles). The Peoples of the Earth.
An invitation to travel of great documentary value, written by Charles Delon within the framework of the famous “Library of Schools and Families.” This work offers a detailed panorama of the customs, costumes and ways of life of the various populations of the globe at the dawn of the 20th century.
The volume is richly illustrated, including 24 color hors-texte plates after the designs of F. Lix, as well as 88 black-and-white in-text engravings.
Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1894 (Third Edition).
A quarto volume (30 x 21 cm), 237 pp. (Missing pages 41-42).
The work is presented in its splendid publisher’s binding in red percaline. The front board is richly adorned with an ornamental pattern of scrolls, floral motifs and geometric borders stamped in gold and black. The spine, smooth, also decorated with golden motifs, bears the title and the author’s name.
The interior of the work is generally clean, despite scattered foxing typical of papers of that era. Note the absence of two flyleaves corresponding to pages 41 and 42.
The superb illustrations, both in color and in black, have retained all their freshness.
A very beautiful copy of this classic of the 19th-century geographic popularization.
