Description from the seller
Antique Berber dagger "Koummya" (Koummiya / Jambiya) - Morocco - second half of the 20th Century - Decorative
Description:
Up for auction is a fascinating traditional Moroccan "Koummya" dagger of exceptional visual impact, dating to the second half of the 20th century.
This piece perfectly embodies the traditional art of the Atlas Berber tribes. It features the iconic slanted "peacock-tail" handle and a richly worked sheath ending with the typical pronounced upward curve. The front is entirely hand-decorated with geometric engravings and raised pyramidal studs, while the back shows the smooth metal finish with a splendid warm patina. It is complete with its two lateral suspension rings, originally used to attach it to a colored wool cord.
Technical details and conditions:
Dimensions: Total length of the piece inserted in the sheath: 40 cm.
Material: Made from an artisanal metal alloy (alpacca/white brass); it does not bear silver hallmarks. The back of the sheath reveals the beautiful warm undertones of the base alloy that have emerged over time.
Blade: Decorative iron blade, not sharpened, firmly set into the hilt. It shows a natural vintage patina and light surface oxidation that enhance its vintage character.
Overall condition: Very good aesthetic condition, solid construction and original components.
A stunning display piece and an ideal addition for collectors of ethnic edged weapons, Oriental militaria, and Islamic/North African art objects. The lot will be packed with the utmost care and shipped with full tracking.
