Gide devoted four years of work to this novel, regarded as one of the most important of the 20th century, a precursor of literary movements such as the Nouveau Roman. The central story follows three characters, two teenage high-school boys and a 38-year-old man, during the few months of a summer and an autumn. Gide multiplies the characters, narrative points of view and various subplots, in a work in which he projects his own person onto the character Édouard.
