The first-generation Hata Zōroku, born in 1823 in Yamashiro Province, studied casting under the famous Ryūbundō workshop and later became highly respected for his mastery of bronze and copper work, especially pieces inspired by ancient Chinese Zhou and Han dynasty bronzes. The Zōroku family became known for refined casting techniques, elegant patinated surfaces, and distinctive gold-applied decoration. The first generation also produced important official works, including imperial and governmental seals during the late Edo and Meiji periods.
