Description from the seller

We are putting up for auction one of the most aristocratic, slender, and sophisticated silhouettes of French high jewelry from the 20th century: the vertical pocket lighter from the iconic Cartier Paris maison, handmade in France throughout the 1970s. This superb collector’s piece stands out for its iconic minimalist aesthetic and unmistakable architectural design, characterized by a solid chassis with a sumptuous textured finish that exudes timeless elegance and the quiet luxury associated with the Place Vendôme firm.
The lighter’s body features the legendary Godron motif (horizontal parallel grooves engraved in depth), a classic Cartier jewelry pattern that runs around all four sides of the piece. This finish not only provides a texturised and highly pleasant hand grip, but also creates an optical play of metallic flashes and shadows of great beauty as the light hits it. With stylized dimensions of 7.1 cm in height, 2.5 cm in width, and barely 1.2 cm in thickness, it is one of the most ergonomic and elegant lighters ever designed, distancing itself from the more robust shapes of the competition of the era. On the base you can clearly see the official brand hallmarks, the workshop seal, and its individual serial number 46170 F, engraved with Cartier’s classic punch.
Mechanically, the piece is a work of art of Swiss-French microengineering from the golden age. It incorporates the hinged cover opening system with a rilled striker roller and the characteristic clean base, which perfectly conceals the regulating valve, the gas loading valve, and the flint compartment. The lighter is in excellent cosmetic condition and fully functional, offering an instant spark and a crisp, stable, and perfectly adjustable flame, as certified in the images.
Conservation Status: Collection Quality / Excellent Vintage
The aesthetic and mechanical condition of this specimen is magnificent, indicating it has been a display piece cared for with meticulous attention:
Chassis and Godron Finish: It is in an extraordinary condition. The horizontal grooves retain all their original relief and show no typical wear from friction or flattening. The edges and corners (critical points of these lighters) are clean and completely free of structural impacts.
Fitting and Hinge: The top lid opens and closes with a firm, clean, and aligned movement, maintaining perfect geometric tension in the hinge without play.
Mechanics: The side roller turns with millimetric smoothness. The system’s seal has been checked, the valve is hermetic (no leaks), and the gas outlet is steady, guaranteeing an instant ignition.
Curious Fact for Collectors
For Catawiki appraisers, Cartier lighters from the classic Godron line in silver finish and slender format have become highly coveted vintage assets due to their enormous scarcity in fully operational condition. The vast majority of these 1970s lighters entering the market suffer from chronic gas loss or severe wear to the relief of their grooves. Finding a specimen with such clean numbering, preserving the textured relief intact, and showing a flame as powerful and living as this is a true rarity that typically sparks interest among high-end collectors in the international market. Being 100% operational and with such a sharp flame ensures intense competition and a truly wild bidding ratio on the international arena.
Wishing you the best of luck with your bids and a wonderful auction to all Catawiki participants!
